When do we peak?

Recently, I came across an article stating how humans peak at different ages in different aspects. Surprisingly, and even perhaps amusingly it turns out that humans peak at different things throughout life from about 6 years of age all the way into the 80s according to the article based on scientific research. I captured the text from that article and decided to create a visualization for you to enjoy and for all of us to remind ourselves.

The chart is a dynamic, data-driven chart created in Excel, with some creative data reshaping and Microsoft Office icons for images. The spacing between the columns or markers convey the relative time distances and is fully configurable as are the columns, markers and their labels just by entering new data in the underlying table or range. Keep in mind that the exact age numbers vary by individual but these are the general timelines. Some of these items or skills can even have more than one peak during one’s lifetime.

Some Callouts

  • Best to learn a new language early. But it’s never too late to learn a new language as other aspects of our brain peak later. Interestingly, of a learned language, the mastery in vocabulary peaks at around 70.
  • Memory is at peak at around 18…so take advantage of this, kids! Study and learn as much as you can at that age, it’ll serve you well for the rest of your lives.
  • Not very surprisingly, the physical aspects are at peak around mid twenties to early thirties. However, at twenty-three, most experienced their first does of satisfaction with life. Another whiff comes much later at age 69, and even the overall happiness after 80! What!?
  • If you’re into strategic games (such as Chess) or work that require patience, tactical planning, analysis and strategy, humans (any gender) tend to peak at around 38. It doesn’t necessarily go away afterward (dependent on individual cognitive health), but that’s the approximate milestone where that starts.
  • Women tend to earn (monetary) their most around age 39, while men peak at around 48. Relating to others, and understanding other people’s emotions come later at around 50+ for all genders.
  • Perhaps the most surprising to me was that finding that happiness with own body comes around age 74! Wowza!
