Q Calc: A Quick Calculator For Common Scenarios

Q Calc is an easy-to-use, and useful calculator designed for mobile devices (Android, iPhone) for many common scenarios in life. It offers calculations for tips, total after sales tax, total after discount and savings, and cashback. Each of these main features and sub-features are explained below.

At the top of the screen, there’s a navigation bar that makes accessing each of the calculator types convenient. Just tap on an icon and you’ll be taken to that specific calculator and its specific user-interface will appear in the main screen.

Top navigation bar

This help article is accessed by tapping Help icon on the navigation bar, for example. There are four main types of calculators: TIP, TAX, DISCOUNT, CASHBACK. Each of them are described below.

TIP CALCULATOR

This calculator lets you enter a bill (or check) amount, enter a percent value for tip, and it’ll determine the amount of in dollars that tip comes out to be. Conversely, it also allows you to enter a fixed dollar amount of tip, and it’ll determine what percentage tip that translates to based on the total bill. It also has a split-bill feature where you simply enter the number of payers (people who will share in paying the tip) and it will show the amount due from each payer for the tip portion as well as the overall bill portion. By default, the number of payers is 1, meaning, one person will pay the bill and tip fully. However, entering a higher number will evenly split the tip and bill and display the amounts required from each payer.

The top portion of the TIP calculator is for entering the original bill, say, at a restaurant, as well as a desired tip percent and number of payers. Tapping Calculate button displays the total tip, total bill, tip due from each payer, bill portion due from each payer based on the desired tip percentage.

To calculate what a specific fixed dollar amount of tip translates to in terms of tip percentage, scroll down and enter the fixed top amount in Total Tip $ field and tap Calculate button for the results (which will be shown immediately below the button).

The original bill amount and number of payers are entered just once for each calculation and both features of the TIP calculator will use those inputs for each session. For further convenience, the most-recent tip percent entered will show up as the default, which can be changed anytime just by entering a new number, and then that new input will be saved for future sessions.

Common use cases for this includes paying at restaurants, for delivery, and for services.

TAX CALCULATOR (Sales Tax)

This calculator simply determines the total, final amount after applying a specific sales tax percentage. The sales tax is not dynamically fetched at this time based on geolocation, however, the most-recent tax percentage is saved for future sessions as a convenience.

Common use cases for this includes determining the total bill for goods and services.

DISCOUNT CALCULATOR

This calculator takes the original price and either a discount percentage, or a fixed discount amount and determines the total amount applying the discount as well as display the savings in dollars (if discount percent was entered) and savings as a percentage (if discount dollar amount was entered).

This screen is vertically scrollable, making it convenient to use either or both discount calculations (input as a discount percent, or input as a discount dollar amount).

Common use cases for this includes determining final price after sale online or at a store, using discount coupons whether as fixed dollar amount or percentage.

CASHBACK CALCULATOR

Cashback is a reward program offered by many credit card companies with certain percentage of credit card usage paid back to the cardholder. This is commonly expressed as a percent value. In this calculator, you just need to enter the purchased amount with the credit card, and the card’s cashback rate.

Common use cases for this includes reward programs, credit card perks.

QUICK NOTES

All output values are formatted to two decimal places regardless of the inputs. Any fractional amount entered for number of payers in TIP caculator is rounded to the nearest whole number for the calculation, and the Number of payers field will show the value used by the app (this is because number of people cannot be fractional in this scenario). Any non-numeric input where number is required will output “NaN” (for Not a Number) and the input(s) should be corrected for accurate output.
