Private Boats Ownership: Stats And Visuals

Step aboard as we sail through private boat and yacht ownership stats. This blog post touches on maritime luxury, dissecting ownership stats across selected regions. From the shores of the Mediterranean to the marinas of Florida and California, I’ll share some basic facts, interesting facts, and insightful visuals. Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or a landlubber dreaming of open waters, or a data nerd, you’ll enjoy the cruise into the world where technology, opulence, and adventure intersect. Along the journey, let’s also explore some the numbers and narratives that define yachting’s elite enclaves across the globe.

The term ‘boat’ here and associated statistics include various types of boats such as yachts, motorized boats (e.g., powerboats, speedboats), and non-motorized boats (e.g., sailboats, kayaks, canoes). Since kayaks and some other non-motorized boats often aren’t registered, estimating their numbers can be challenging. Instead of relying on registration data, estimates for these types of boats often come from surveys and studies conducted by boating associations, market research firms, and recreational organizations. So, the actual numbers for non-motorized boats are likely higher in the USA. We’re also looking at stats regarding privately owned ‘boats’ (non-commercial) only. Let’s look at some numbers for the USA and selected countries of the world.

How many private boats are there in the world?

The total number of privately-owbed boats is about 33 million in 2023. Almost a half of them (around 16 million) are found in the USA. Many of them may not actually belong to Americans as they are often registered in other jurisdictions but docked there.

What country has the most private boat owners?

The United States has the highest number of boat owners globally. According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA), approximately 11.9 million households in the United States own a boat.  This is by the total raw number, not the highest percentage of ownership per capita, which belongs to Finland.

What percent of America own a boat?

Approximately 12% of households in the United States own a boat, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Note that Boats per capita in the USA is 0.05 (that translates to 5% of the total population). However, 12% of households relates to the percentage of households, not individuals.

Yacht, Superyacht, Megayacht, and Gigayacht

A regular yacht is classified as a recreational water vessel 10 meters (33 feet) or more long. A superyacht is a pleasure vessel typically ranging from 40 metres (130 ft) to more than 180 metres (590 ft) in length and is professionally crewed.

By some definitions, superyachts range from 37 meters (~120 ft) to 60 meters (~200 ft). Those over 60 meters are known as megayachts and boats over 90 meters (~300 ft) are referred to as Gigayachts.
Yachts and superyachts can be powered by motor or sail.

The top 3 (longest) superyachts in the world today (2025):
179.7 meters (590 feet) named Azzam owned by owner in UAE.
164 meters (538 feet) named Fulk Al Salamah owned by the Sultan of Oman.
162.5 meters (533 feet) named Eclipse owned by Roman Abramovich of Russia.

Larry Ellsion’s yacht named Musashi is 87.8 meters (288 feet) long. May be termed as a megayacht.
Jeff Bezos’ yacht named Abeona is 75 meters (246 feet) long. May be termed as a megayacht.

According to the statistics for 2023, the largest number of superyacht owners live in Russia, Uzbekistan, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates. However, the locations of the homeports often do not coincide with the yacht owners’ home countries or the countries where their companies are registered (often yachts are written in the name of a company rather than a natural person).

Criticisms of superyachts+:
Superyachts (and the like) face several criticisms mainly around their environmental impact and social implications such as:
– Environmental Impact: Superyachts are known for their high carbon emissions. The world’s top 300 superyachts are responsible for around 315,000 tons of CO2 annually. [prohiblux.com]
– Economic Inequality: Superyachts are symbols of extreme wealth and luxury. Critics argue that the resources spent on these vessels could be better used to address social and environmental issues.

Despite these criticisms, the industry is making efforts to address sustainability concerns. For example, the idea of nuclear-powered superyachts has been proposed as a solution to reduce emissions, but it comes with its own set of challenges.
